My New Baby

My campus is quite far away from everything, so not always easy to buy some stuff, such as food or whatever.

My Queen with her car are not always available and same for my very good friend who lives about 45mn from my campus even though she often helps me on Sunday to buy food in Carrefour.

So Queen and I decided to buy another car, and my life should be much easier now.

We picked it up last Saturday morning in the showroom. Here is the baby before driving it out of the showroom:

Colt Plus

Colt Plus from Mitsubishi, negotiated with all options. Deflectors have been just received and will be installed this afternoon or whatever.

The volume is quite impressive.

It’s supposed to be an environmental friendly car, consuming very few.

I will drive to go back to my campus this afternoon or maximum tomorrow morning.

Taiwan: Is It Coming Back? Cruel and Viciousness.

We thought that the typhoon LUPIT will let Taiwan alone.

And… It changed its direction to the North, toward Taiwan.

Then, we thought we will have heavy rains during several days.

And… It changed again its direction to the East.

Then, we thought, OK this time it’s done.

And… It seems it’s coming back (see the blue arrow in the below snapshot)…

By the way, do you know the meaning of LUPIT?

It is Tagalog for cruel or viciousness.

We should add: tricky

Yes, indeed…

Chinese New Year

I didn’t post since few days…

Chinese New Year means vacations too 🙂

I spent almost one week in a wonderful small island in the south of Taiwan and now it is time to celebrate with family and friends the Chinese New Year (today is the new year eve).

I will go back to post on Monday or Tuesday even though Taiwan will be on vacations up to next Friday.

I will put some pictures of this beautiful island (Liu Chiou) on Monday or Tuesday.

About My Watch

Because of some reasons (a too long story to explain here), I needed to buy a new watch.

Given the fact that my priorities list doesn’t include the purchase of any watch, I was looking for a simple one, such as Seiko, not expensive, the time that my priorities list allows me to choose a better brand.

Queen D and me went around NTU in Taipei (a reasonable place for shopping) and finally (even though we didn’t have so much time, we stay a while in a watch shop) we bought a brand I never heard about before (other brands didn’t fit my needs).

This brand is Junkers.

Curious, I checked on Internet and I discovered that Junkers is a German brand (so we do not pronounce the “j”).

It was a very famous aircraft constructor in the first half of the twentieth century.

With enormous advances in air travel during the 1920’s and 30’s, there was practically no airline worldwide without Junkers aircraft.

The German company POINTtec produces since a long time, Junkers aviation design wristwatches and they are popular collector items. Each watch has an edition number and the Junkers aero plane symbol engraved on the stainless steel base.

So it seems that finally, I got a very good watch even if it was not my first target.

Anyway, even when I was buying expensive watches, I never followed the trend or fashion. When I bought my Breitling several years ago, this brand was merely known. But after few years, it became a very expensive collector.

Here is it:

It is a Junkers JU 52 (named after one of the aircrafts) using for the movement, the Poljot P3133, 23 Jewels.

I also discovered that since 2007, Junkers uses in many 3133 chronos the new gilded movements with blued screws and Geneva polish (as the first and only watchmaker so far !) .

It’s a mechanical chronograph (43 hours reserve), with a sapphire glass, handmade leatherband, titanium laminated dial, a screwed glassback and 5ATM water resistant.

Because this brand is (except for some professionals) merely known, the selling price was very reasonable (plus we got a discount after bargaining). Obviously, even the shopkeeper didn’t know so much about this brand.

It seems that the manufacturer doesn’t rely on marketing but on word of mouth…

And according what I read on Internet, this brand is on its way to be famous.

So if you need a new watch, very reliable, hurry because very soon, its price won’t be so attractive.

Pilots in India Often Fail Alcohol Tests

This story reminds me the situation in the former USSR, at the time when it was usual to see chickens in the cabin, and drunk pilots.

Around 50 pilots each year in India are being grounded because they had consumed alcohol before taking a flight, the country’s civil aviation authorities said Tuesday.

Civil aviation rules specify that pilots and cabin crew cannot consume alcohol 12 hours before taking a flight.

“We do catch pilots who had taken alcohol routinely and so does the airlines,” Kanu Gohain, a top DGCA official told Reuters Tuesday.

A pilot can be grounded for three months and he can lose his license if he repeats the mistake again, Gohain added.

A flight from India’s capital to the eastern city of Patna was cancelled Saturday after a routine medical test on crew members revealed the pilot had consumed alcohol.

That was from DGCA.

Do domestic airlines report all the cases?

A question for Shiva 🙂

A story from Reuters.

Taiwan – China: Something I Don’t Understand

Everyone knows about the meaning of Formosa.

And for sure, Taiwan is a beautiful country.

No doubt.

Each time I am visiting a new place or even going back to a same spot (for hiking for example), I am always amazed by the beauty of the landscape.

But I also remember a lot of comments and articles on the local forums or news paper about tourism. Obviously at that time, the cabinet did not seem to show any strong willing to develop a strategy for that services industry.

But since now cross-straight tourism will be allowed starting from July, we can notice some strange announcements.

For example, the actual cabinet is devising measures to upgrade services for Chinese tourists. See for example HERE or HERE.

What does it mean?

Other tourists do not deserve an upgraded service?

Other tourists are not very important?

The related inflows were not so insignificant until now, right?

Besides, on the today Taipei Times, some local officials want to push the Falun Gong to leave the tourist place they used to protest.

What is the main reason?

Because they are on a tourist spot?

The point is to satisfy future Chinese tourists and avoid any clash with them.

I do believe it is good that more Chinese tourists are allowed to visit Taiwan. It could improve mutual understanding between people.

But what I just mentioned before, could mislead foreign visitors, letting them think that Taiwan is abandoning its core value.

I don’t get the logic of that.

Any idea? (even if of course, anyone has already an obvious answer… 🙂 )
