China Is Not Welcome in Naples, Italy

An interesting picture, taken in Naples, Italy:

The purpose of the sign is to inform shoppers that no item was made in China…

Beside, look at the shape of the sign. A “cloud bringing bad weather”?

Taiwan: Please, Don’t Go Away

I am feeling a little bit strange about a proposal from the lawmakers here in Taiwan, who are planning to propose one (more?) amendment(s) to the Criminal Code that would allow judges and prosecutors to punish defendants, lawyers, reporters, activists and any other people who publicize evidence or case details in a manner that upsets the court.

Obviously, no precise statement, so only the Court (or/and prosecutors) can decide who is the offender.

From the article:

The new court environment would resemble the bad old days of Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) rule, in which judges took their orders from above as necessary and issued orders below, and defendants had precious little advocacy and were routinely framed.

And this one…

We are led to believe, if this amendment is passed, that the material many prosecutors use to defame suspects through leaks to pliant media outlets cannot be held to account by legal teams defending their clients — at risk of prosecution by the same people who leaked the information.

Maybe I misunderstood the news but in case I didn’t, It’s time to start to worry about Democracy here.

And still if I didn’t misunderstood (But to be wrong is always possible) obviously since the new President (from KMT), many things changed in Taiwan since one year.

By the way, if my memory doesn’t fail me, Chinese are coming tomorrow in Taiwan for further talks about well, you know, making Taiwan more (?) close to…

Even Taipei City is spending 10 million to support an event where Taiwan is described as a Chinese region (see my twitter).

I remember here in the 80’s when Taiwan was still under martial law (war against China…?…)… Officials at the airport used to even check what I had in my pant’s and vest’s pockets at the airport before going through the metal detector, having a look on the different name cards I had…

I hope we are not going back to that time.

Taiwan, my lovely beautiful place, where are you going?

Please my Dear, don’t go too far…

A Sad Day For Economists: R.I.P. Paul Samuelson

Paul A. Samuelson, the first American Nobel laureate in economics and the foremost academic economist of the 20th century, died Sunday at his home in Belmont, Mass. He was 94.

During my undergraduate years, being the guru of my professors, Samuelson influenced the way we were thinking about economics, even though I must confess that I switched later on the Chicago School and Friedman ideas (by the way, Samuelson got his Bachelor degree at the University of Chicago – before going to Harvard where he was attracted to the ideas of professor Alvin Hansen, the leading exponent of Keynesian theory in America – and was a friend of Friedman, a graduate student at that time).PaulSamuelson

When Samuelson received the Nobel Prize in 1970, the Swedish Royal Academy said that he "has done more than any other contemporary economist to raise the level of scientific analysis in economic theory," according to MIT’s release. He was awarded a National Medal of Science in 1996.

Samuelson also helped build MIT’s economics department into a world-renowned research and teaching institution, in bringing in Solow, Engle, Klein, Krugman, Modigliani, Merton, and Stiglitz.

Samuelson wrote one of the most widely used college textbooks in the history of American education. The book, “Economics,” first published in 1948, was the nation’s best-selling textbook for nearly 30 years. Translated into 20 languages, it was selling 50,000 copies in the 90’s.

Mathematics had already been employed by social scientists, but Samuelson brought the discipline into the mainstream of economic thinking, showing how to derive strong theoretical predictions from simple mathematical assumptions.

He certainly redefined modern economics through his lessons and publications and introduced Keynesian’s concepts to Kennedy and Johnson.

The rest is history.

Let’s hope that my students will remember his name and incredible achievements.

Yes! There Is A Conspiracy! Be Careful!

My dear readers, I noticed a while ago that something was unusual but I didn’t pay too much attention on it.

But obviously, something is wrong.

Really wrong.

So of course, I started to pay more attention on the small details.

I do not know who is the villain. Or maybe it’s a group of villain? Or the government is behind that?

…Or worst, aliens are already here…

Here are the evidence.

Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper.

Groceries are heavier.

And, everything is farther away.

Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long my street had become!

And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones.

They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they’re red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader?

I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn’t even recognize me! Can you believe that?

I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own refection ……… Well, REALLY NOW- even mirrors are not made the way they used to be!

Aliens or whoever are EVERYWHERE!

I told you! It’s a conspiracy!

Another thing, everyone drives so fast today!

You’re risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the freeway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror. Beside… I have no idea why they are acting like that when I am driving…

The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank, but in reverse.

Do they think I actually believe the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they’re fooling? Do they think I am stupid?

I’d like to call up someone in authority to report what’s going on — but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they’ve printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in here!

I told you! It’s a conspiracy!

All I can do is pass along this warning: We are under attack!

Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.

What the government is doing?

What the ARMY is doing?

Taiwan: It Has Its Shape And Color, But It’s Not Real

All of you remember of course about the “special areas” where people could protest in China during the last Games.

And of course you still remember that the people who dared to do so, finished their day in jail even though it was publicly authorized.

Well, given the fact that some top negotiators from China are coming to Taichung, Taiwan is talking to set up a protest zone to accommodate demonstrators during that time.

… Are you surprised?

The mayor of Taichung is denying to plan such a zone (HERE), even adding that its constitutionality is questionable.

So, who is planning this move?

Beside, what I understood in the past when this plan was first announced, this “eventual zone” was supposed to welcome freely protestors.

But […] the city’s police chief Hu Mu-yuan said Thursday that people who intend to hold a protest should first seek permission from the police…  applications should be filed six days before the demonstration […]

It has the shape of freedom, it has the color of freedom but… it’s not freedom.

Or maybe I misunderstood?
